The Bix 7 Road Race
The Bix 7 Road race takes place on the Saturday of the Bix Jazz Festival
in July. The race has grown into an icon of road races in the US,
especially the Mid-West. Over 20,000 people run or walk the seven mile
course through the streets of Davenport, Iowa. Along the race course,
tens of thousands of fans cheer the runners along, and musical bands
are stationed along the route to provide some race-course entertainment.
Elite
runners from around the world compete in this race for top prize money
and other prizes. Many use the Bix 7 as training ground for the World
Championships. It is not unusual to see a runner from Kenya battling it
out with a runner from Russia for the finish. This is also an
opportunity to see Olympic runners make their way through Davenport,
beginning with the mile long grueling climb up Brady Street hill.
